Idols Disappoint Yet Again

The final four were an utter disappointment last night singing legend Barry Gibbs' songs. My enthusiasm for American had waned this year but last week’s rock performances re-energized me. Hopefully, this week’s lackluster performances were due to the contestants having to learn two news songs this week instead one. We'll see. Next week they're going to be singing three.

1. Melinda - "Love You Inisde and Out" - Maybe it's just me but I hate falsetto's. The first performance just didn't work. Simon was right on the money when he said it was a back-up singers performance. Her voice just got completely lost in the music.

"How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" - The first half was just average, but she brought it home in the second half. Overall, her weakest week yet.

2. Blake - You Should Be Dancing" - It started off shaky but as usual Blake made the song his own. It wasn't nearly as good as last week but it was ok.

"This is Where I Came In" - I didn't care for the song, but he made it his own. He should have sung one song normal and completely tore the other one up. Instead he produced two mediocre performances.

3. Lakisha - "Staying Alive" - She needed a song like this to showcase her personality. The vocals were good, but nothing spectacular.

"Run To Me" - Another great vocal, but nothing out of this world.

4. Jordin - "To Love Somebody" - Some moments of the song were great, other bland and disappointing. The judges loved it, I wasn't impressed.

"Woman in Love" - The best vocal of the night for me, but yet again I was disappointed.

So Who's Going Home

This is where it gets real tricky. Both Blake and Lakisha have been in the bottom group before. So I'd have to say one of them will be leaving us tonight. However, I think Blake will have captured Phil and Chris' fans so I doubt he'll be leaving. My choice is Lakisha.

Bon Jovi Night: A Night to Remember

Last night Bon Jovi went behind the scenes with the idols and guided them on how to rock it out. This was overall the best night of the competition thus far. But with two contestants going home this week, instead of one, anything could happen. After raising $70 million last week for the Idol Gives Back charity the producers decided that they couldn’t bear to send anyone home on charity night so last weeks votes will be added to this weeks. But for me the real excitement is that American Idol is back.

1. Phil Stacey – “Blaze of Glory” – For me this was his best performance in the competition. He blew it out of the water. Some contestants have begun to fizzle out, but for the past three weeks Phil has only grown in the competition. He’s done everything he possibly could within the bounds of his vocal ability the last weeks to keep himself in the competition. But the question is, will it prove to be too late.

2. Jordin Sparks – “Livin On A Prayer – She struggled, she faltered, but she didn’t quite fail. From the beginning of the song it wasn’t hard to tell this was not the comfortable, confident and energetic Jordin we’ve come to love. She made up some lost ground during the chorus, but it just wasn’t good.

3. Lakisha Jones - “This Ain’t A Love Song” – She’s back. This is week one Lakisha. She picked a great song and belted it out. For the past couple of weeks she’s fizzled, but last night proved she wasn’t just a one hit wonder. As long as she picks the right songs, she’ll soar. But those were my first thoughts. The problem with Lakisha is she naturally picked the one Aretha Franklin meets Bon Jovi song that he ever wrote or sang. For Lakisha the song and the performance was predictable and safe. Typical Lakisha, nothing outside of the box. But at this point in the competition I’ve had the realization that Lakisha can’t do anything else. Therefore, in the end, for her, it was a great song choice to keep herself in the competition for another week but not win it.

4. Blake Lewis – “You Give Love a Bad Name” – This performance gave me mini-chills all over my body. It was spectacular. Far and above my favorite Blake performance of the season. He infused a new age funk with a classic song and it was awesome. He completely tore apart one of Bon Jovi’s signature hits and made it his own. It was risky to take such a well-known song that’s loved by millions and completely rework it. But I loved it. This is the song that ensures Blake a spot in the final two. In fact, I think this could Blake’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” A stellar performance.

5. Chris Richardson – “Wanted Dead or Alive – Poor, poor Chris. To have to follow Blake must have killed him, and it may just be what knocks him right out of the competition. It wasn’t bad, wasn’t great, just good. But at this point, good doesn’t cut it, especially when you’ve got four out of this world performances. It also doesn’t help that this was one of Chris Daughtry’s signature songs from last season. Daughtry’s fans may not appreciate that.

6. Melinda Doolittle – “Have A Nice Day” – Blake may have given me mini chills but Melinda she gave me the full thing. Wow, another favorite performance for me. That’s three for last night. There’s a reason she went last, what better way to end a great night but with one of the best performances of the entire season. Unlike Lakisha who played it safe Melinda threw caution into the wind and jumped out of the box. She kicked her Donna Summer side to the curb and brought the Tina Turner side out. For me this song sealed the deal: She’s the next American Idol.

So Who’s Going Home:

I can tell you who’s not going home, Blake and Melinda. The rest are at risk. I’m going to pick Lakisha and Chris though. Chris has been pretty stale for the past several weeks. Not great, not bad, just all right. And while Lakisha stepped it up last night she’s had a couple of disappointing weeks, while some of the other contestants rose to the challenge. Jordin is certainly at risk, but she had such a powerful week last week that those votes alone should be enough to carry her through to next week. Phil is the last bottom feeder left in the competition, but he keeps stepping up and growing. Plus he’s the underdog and people like underdogs. So there it is Lakisha and Chris.

Latin Night With J-Lo Fails to Heat up the Stage...

Melinda - "Sway" - She really made me smile with this performance and she moved away from the Donna Summer theme that's stuck to the past oh so however many weeks. Having said she also achieved a certain amount sexiness and her response to Simon's critique was classic.

Lakisha - "Conga" - Finally we see some personality coming out of Lakisha. Last week I called her predictable, but I would never predicted her singing the conga. Even though the judges called it safe I think she needed a song to showcase personality rather than her talent.

Chris - "Smooth" - This is the second week in a row that he used the band as a prop and brought them up close on stage with him. It was a good diversion because the song didn't flow until the second half. The vocals just were not great.

Haley - "Turn the Beat Around - Another fun and sexy performance by Haley. When she walked out onto to stage I thought "how much shorter can her shorts get." They seem to be shrinking weekly. But hey her voice isn't going to win her the competition and she knows that so she's using what God gave her. Who can fault her for that?

Phil - "Maria Maria" - I thought his vocals were better than Chirs' but the problem with Phil is he's just boring. Simply put, there's nothing in his performances or personality that make me want to see him stay on the show.

Jordin "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" - WOW, how can anyone sing this song and make boring. I don't know but Jordin found a way. I blame it on the arrangement because she's better than this.

Blake - "I Need to Know" - The best of the night, hands down. He was connected to the song. He felt it, he lived it, he was great.

Sanjaya - "Mesa Me Mucho" - The vocals weren't bad. The performance wasn't bad. But I've come to expect Sanjaya to come out on stage and be outrageous, he didn't do that this week. I was bored. If we have to live with Sanjaya on the show, I at least want to laugh at him every week.

Who's Going Home -

There's been one trend with who's been going home every week and that is that the person hasn't been in the bottom group yet. Obviously Brandon hadn't been in the bottom group because it was week 1, but neither had Stephanie, Chris S. or Gina. So if that trend continued Chris R., Haley, Phil and Sanjaya are safe. That means one of the "diva's" would go home. And I'd say Lakisha would be the first diva to leave. But if not then Phil's going home.

Tony Bennett Puts Crowd to Sleep

Bad theme. The best performances kept me awake and the others puts me to sleep. But here's a run down of the final nine.

1. Blake Lewis – “Mack the Knife” – It was a good performance, but nothing to write home about. As the themes get more restrictive Blake’s weaknesses are being highlighted. Having said that the second half was better than the first.

2. Phil Stacey – “Night and Day” – Phil had a Frank Sinatra vibe going on tonight.
The song started off extremely boring. It started picking up in the middle but by that time I was almost asleep. The last note was great, but this may be the performance that sends Phil packing.

3. Melinda Doolittle – “I’ve Got Rhythm” – I needed a good big dose of Melinda by this time to wake me up. Spectacular.

4. Chris Richardson – “Mr. Saturday Day” – One of his best performances if not the best to date. He didn’t sound like a chipmunk and I think this is the first week he outdid Blake.

5. Jordin Sparks – “On a Clear Day” – Another clean, beautiful performance. Even though it was a slow song Jordin injected it with some great energy and fun.

6. Gina Glocksen – “Smile” – This was a very pretty song. It was pleasant, sweet and nice. But I think Gina needs to rock it out. That’s where she’s most comfortable and that’s what separates her from the pack.

7. Sanjaya – “Heaven” – I actually didn’t think it was that awful. He made me laugh a few times. The judges called him an entertainer and they’re right. He entertains but he doesn’t move me.

8. Haley Scarnato – “Ain’t Misbehavin” – I think it was Haley’s best performance yet. She doesn’t have the big voice and her range is limited so she has to use all of her other “assets” to win votes. She’s sexy, sassy and injects her performances with attitude.

9. Lakisha – “Stormy Weather” – Predictable. She’s great but I’m tired of her. She comes out every week and does the same damn thing. I’m not surprised or impressed anymore.

So who’s going home:

I believe Phil’s lackluster performance coupled with his second place start will send him home. As for the other two spots it could be anybody. Haley and Sanjaya are the obvious choices but it could easily be Gina or Jordin. If I had my choice I’d send Phil home. He’s boring and does nothing for me. Sanjaya makes me laugh. And Haley makes me want her to grow and do better since she’s the underdog. She has just enough talent for her performances to be respectable but her limited ability keeps her at the bottom of the pack.

Another Mini Shocker

Two weeks ago we saw Sabrina Sloan and Sunhead Head just miss the top 12 and many idol fans cried foul. Two weeks later Chris Richardson lands in the bottom two and Stephanie Edwards gets sent packing. Chris R. has been a favorite from day one and very little can be said about Stephanie's vocals. So what the hell happened?

The problem with this season is that there are too many good vocalists, and unfortunately they're just all too similar. For the most during each season of America Idol it's not about who's going to win, it's about who's going to lose each week. No one was surprised when Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard went to the final two together. No one was surprised when Fantasia took home the trophy. And no one was surprised when Carrie Underwood stole the show. Each year it's been easy to pick the winner. This year it just isn't so. Can anyone really say that Lakisha Jones will undoubtedly beat Melinda Doolittle, or that Blake Lewis will go further than Chris Richardson? Nope, I don't think so. And that's a problem. While Melinda and Lakisha are spectacular vocalists and fabulous performers, what really separates them? Besides a few pounds and slight variations in their personality they're essentially the same. And the same goes for Blake and Chris. Besides a different haircut can anyone point to a major difference. These contestants are splitting votes like crazy. And that's why Chris R. landed up in the bottom 2. He's not competing against the top 11, he's competing against Blake.

The same also goes for Stephanie who was competing with Jordin Sparks, Melinda and Lakisha. And I wouldn't be surprised if those three diva's end up in the bottom 3 together at some point. Their styles are just too similar, so fans are voting on personality alone, and even then there's not much difference.

Contestants like Haley Scarnato, Gina Glocksen and Sanjaya Malakar will most certainly benefit, in fact, they already have. Just look around, they're still in the competition.

Am I sad to see Stephanie go? Not really. She's forgettable. There are a lot of things that could be said about Sanjaya, but forgettable is not one of them.

Top 11 Sing Songs From the British Invasion

Haley Scarnato – “Tell Him” – This was a perfect song choice for her. She was confident, comfortable, and had lots of fun. And she remembered her words. It was definitely her best performance yet. Her first place position though may land her in the bottom 3.

Chris Richardson – “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” – The judges loved it, but I felt it was a bit boring. However, the sole guitar next to him on stage made the performance memorable. Unfortunately for Chris is still singing in Blake’s shadow.

Stephanie Edwards – “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” – She has a great voice. When she bobs her head up and down I keep having flashbacks of Fantasia and it’s very distracting. There’s just too many other singers in the competition that sing like her, but stand out more.

Blake Lewis – “Time of the Season” – He is definitely the best entertainer this year. Unlike Taylor Hicks who was a corny performer, Blake is sexy and cool. It was an awesome performance and he’s hands down my favorite guy this year.

Lakisha Jones – “Diamonds are Forever” – Her vocals were spot on, but compared to her earlier performances it was nothing spectacular. She definitely peaked too early. She has nowhere to go. She won’t win the competition.

Phil Stacey – “Tabacco Road” – I felt like I was watching a watered down version of Chris Daughtry perform as Phil took the stage. He’s at risk. He doesn’t stand out enough. Last night showed he’s not a rocker and we still don’t exactly what he is.

Jordin Sparks – “I Who Have Nothing” – All I can say is WOW. This was the best performance of the night. It gave me chills. Her heart was in this performance 100 percent. She is the dark horse this season.

Sanjaya Malakar – “You Really Got Me” – He definitely came out on stage with a revived sense of confidence. But man was this really bad. It was just awful. Terrible. Horrific. And just plain odd. His moves coupled with his Michael Jackson-like white gloves. Very weird. But on a positive note the crying girl in the audience made me laugh throughout the performance, otherwise I would have been cringing.

Gina Glocksen – “Paint it Black” – Perfect song choice for her and while her vocals weren’t spot on she still brought it home. Most rockers aren’t vocalists anyway, they’re performers. I hope she sticks around.

Chirs Sligh – “She’s not There” – I’ve lost my earlier enthusiasm for Chris S. He longer interests me. The beginning was boring, the chorus was fun but it was the wrong song choice.

Melinda – “As Long As He Needs Me” – The first half was boring but she nailed the ending. Again another boring un-dramatic song. Like Lakisha dramatic songs suit her better.

The Bottom Three

If there is truly a God, Sanjaya will be sent packing. But I have a strange feeling he will slip through another week. So my second choice would be Phil, who adds nothing to the competition. Even Sanjaya adds more than Phil. While it would be easy to say Haley or Gina will round out the bottom three I have a feeling the third person in the bottom three may be a mini-shocker like Stephanie or Chris R.
